Specials

Shorthand for special damages: the itemised economic losses in an injury claim.

In everyday use, specials means the medical bills and lost wages that can be itemised and evidenced, as opposed to general damages for pain and suffering. The distinction matters because both published valuation methods build from the specials figure, and because an adjuster's first move is usually to test it. Gaps in treatment, unitemised statements and undocumented wage loss all reduce the number that everything else multiplies.
